activity A New Frontier: Sleep in the ICU, Exploration Beyond the Sleep Laboratory
Abstract/SynopsisSleep is necessary for a number of basic biologic functions including metabolism and growth. The culture of caring for ICU patients has not focused on the importance of sleep and hence the environment is not conducive to obtaining restorative sleep. ICU patients suffer from fragmented and disruptive sleep with a growing amount of evidence indicating that disturbances in sleep and circadian rhythms lead to negative consequences. Despite the profound physiologic importance of sleep, little emphasis is made to address aspects of sleep and circadian rhythms, outcomes associated with sleep impairment, and the challenges to improving sleep in the ICU. In order to narrow this gap, this program will improve knowledge by reviewing normal sleep and the sleep related issues unique to the critically ill patient. We will improve competence by familiarizing the practitioner on how current ICU practices may lead to sleep impairment and negative consequences. Finally we will enhance performance by addressing specific ways to implement practice change within the ICU environment in the present while acknowledging the future needs of research in the field.
