Biography

Dr. Pérez graduated from University of Puerto Rico and the Ponce School of Medicine. He completed residency in the Ponce School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. He completed his Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship training at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Pérez is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine.

He provides outpatient clinical care in Geriatric Psychiatry and Primary Care Mental Health Integration in the Veteran Affairs (VA) Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, CT where he primarily provides culturally competent care for the Latino veteran population; his expertise is in older Latino mental health, complex neuropsychiatric illness and cognitive disorders, as well as in the interface of psychiatry and medical illness.

Dr. Pérez is the Director of Clinical Research Services, Latino Community in the Yale University Alzheimer’s Disease Research Unit (ADRU) where he works with a team to conduct clinical research to advance the understanding and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in the Latino community.

He is actively involved in the supervision and education of Yale Geriatric Psychiatry and Geriatric Medicine fellows, psychiatry residents, medical students, pharmacy students, and advanced practice registered nurse students. He teaches didactic courses for geriatric psychiatry fellows, geriatric medicine fellows, psychiatry residents, and Neuropsychology interns. Dr. Pérez co-directs the Yale Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Journal Club and Didactic Curriculum. On a national level, he is an active member of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry's (AAGP) Teaching and Training Committee.

Dr. Pérez is board certified in General and Geriatric Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. His research interests focus on the recruitment of underrepresented trainees, the education of residents and fellows in the field of Geriatric Psychiatry, and the engagement of Latinos in clinical trials for Alzheimer’s Disease.
