2001 - 2008activity Smoking - Effects on Productivity in China
Abstract/SynopsisProfessors Sindelar and Wang study the impacts of smoking and quitting dynamics on productivity, which is measured by days absent from work. Their work consists of two stages: first, investigating whether smokers have more days absent than those who do not smoke; second, examining the impact of quitting smoking on days absent. Those who quit smoking can be categorized into three groups, those who quit but relapse, those who quit for a short-term, and those who quit for the long-term. In addition to the analysis on the effects of smoking and quitting on productivity, they also plan to explore the factors that influence peoples' smoking and quitting behavior, including the reasons that people start to smoke, the reasons that people have failed to quit smoking, and the reasons for continued abstinence.
