Biography
In Memoriam
1937 – 2023
Fred Wright received his A.B. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. He trained as a resident in Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and as a postdoctoral investigator in kidney physiology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. At Yale his research continued to focus on the structure and function of the kidney, with an emphasis on mechanisms of ion transport by kidney tubules in health and disease. He joined the medical staff at the West Haven VA Medical Center in 1977 and continued to be involved in laboratory research and teaching of medical students and advanced trainees. His research activities have been supported by Career Development awards: the National Institutes of Health Special Fellowship award, the American Heart Association Established Investigator award, and the VA Medical Investigator award. His research projects have been funded by the Veterans Health Administration, the American Heart Association, and the National Institutes of Health. He has been a member and Chairman of the VA Health Services R&D Career Development Review Committee, and has served as the Northeastern representative on the Field Research Advisory Committee of the VA Office of Research and Development. He served in 2008-09 on the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Health Research and the Privacy of Health Information.
