Art and science are intricately woven together in a new short film, featuring Yale School of Medicine Associate Professor of Urology, Sarah Lambert, MD.
The documentary, produced by Greenwich Hospital’s Office of Development, highlights one of Lambert’s young patients suffering with hydronephrosis [swelling of one or both kidneys]. The story pivots as it becomes clear the one-year-old will need immediate surgery.
As Lambert and the family retell what happens next, the film, called Restoration: Thread and Gold, cuts away to a Japanese artist explaining the delicate handiwork required in Kintsugi restoration, an ancient art of restoring broken pottery.
“The two leads have extraordinary parallels. It actually blew us away,” says Noel Appel, Greenwich Hospital’s senior vice president and chief development officer.
“Yes, they were in beautiful, organic harmony,” adds Katia Michailidis, also with Greenwich Hospital and the film’s creator/producer/director.

Lambert says she was honored to be part of the creative project, which showcases what can be a typical day in the life of a pediatric urologist.
“We’re restoring all the time,” says Lambert.
