Jeanne Steiner, DO, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), was honored Dec. 6 by Columbus House with its John S. Martinez Community Service Award.
The annual award is named in honor of the late state representative John S. Martinez who was widely respected for his service to others. Martinez was a counselor and board member at Columbus House, a non-profit agency based in New Haven which serves people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by providing shelter and housing and fostering their personal growth and independence.
Steiner has served on the board of Columbus House, including two years as Chair, since 2013. She became involved in Columbus House through her professional work, providing support for the agency’s Outreach and Engagement program. She then volunteered with Congregation Mishkan Israel for the Abraham’s Tent emergency housing program. She has served meals to clients of Columbus House, attended events, and participated in a variety of fund drives and donation challenges.
She is stepping down from the Columbus House board at the end of 2018 but will continue to oversee new clinical and research programs related to mental health issues among people who are experiencing homelessness.
Besides her work at CMHC, where she oversees programs in quality improvement, clinical risk management, and medical staff affairs, Steiner is Director of the Yale Fellowship in Public Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Yale Division of Public Psychiatry.
