Dr. David Mulligan, Chief of Transplantation, Department of Surgery, has been elected Vice President, President-Elect of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS) Board of Directors. The OPTN/UNOS manages the nation’s organ transplant network under federal contract.
“It is an honor and a privilege,” said Dr. Mulligan, about the news of his election. “I stand on my colleagues’ shoulders in all this, because together, I am confident we will make strides in the lifesaving work of organ donation and enable the best care for our patients.”
Dr. Mulligan will serve a one-year term beginning July 1, 2019; he will become the board’s president in July 2020. As Vice President/President-Elect, he will also serve as Vice Chair of the OPTN/UNOS Executive Committee and UNOS Corporate Affairs Committee.
In his role, Dr. Mulligan will lead the development of national organ transplantation policy, and oversee management of key initiatives such as improving outcomes and safety for both donors and recipients and ensuring equity to access.

Dr. Mulligan’s election by members of OPTN/UNOS is a testament to his near two-decades commitment to the community, serving on the Ad Hoc Systems Performance Committee, and serving previously in a leadership capacity on the Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplantation Committee, Policy Oversight Committee, Membership and Professional Standards Committees, and on the Liver Regional Review Board.
