Twelve members of the incoming Yale School of Medicine (YSM) MD and MD-PhD classes already have “started” their medical school experience, in the Summer to Advance Research Training at YSM program (START@Yale). The overarching goal of the program is to encourage interest in physician-scientist careers among entering YSM students. Matriculating students can participate, regardless of prior research experience. Now in its 12th year, 175 YSM students have completed START@Yale to date.
The program, which runs from June 12 to August 3, includes an eight week mentored research experience, journal clubs, didactic activities, and a final symposium. Laura Ment, MD, professor of Pediatrics and Neurology and associate dean for admissions and financial aid, and Peter Aronson, MD, C. N. H. Long Professor of Medicine and associate director, MD-PhD Program, serve as co-directors, while more than 35 YSM faculty participate as mentors.
