NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Diversity in surgery is recognized as lagging behind other medical fields in part due to the perception of the hierarchical nature of the specialty. This Grand Rounds will celebrate the strides made in augmenting diversity in the Yale Department of Surgery, while simultaneously acknowledging the needs to be more inclusive and less biased in the future.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strides made in assuring diversity in the Yale Surgical Community
  • Focus on future efforts to increase and augment diversity in the future
  • Acknowledge that diversity does not only include gender bias, but includes explicit and implicit bias towards under-represented minorities.
  • Introduce the concept of microaggression and how it may negatively impact a culture of diversity.
