Marijuana and Nicotine Vaping Prevention Videogame Coming to Three CT Middle Schools
A top public health concern among today’s adolescents is the widespread use of nicotine and marijuana vaping devices. Now, two researchers at Yale School of Medicine, Kimberly Hieftje, PhD, and Deepa Camenga, MD, MHS, are teaming up with the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) to bring a classroom-based virtual reality (VR) nicotine and marijuana vaping prevention videogame to students in three Connecticut middle schools.

Yale Clinicians Take on Growing Need for Adolescent Addiction Medicine Services in Connecticut
In 2022, adolescents with a substance use disorder in Connecticut utilized emergency services at twice the rate of adults (18% versus 9%) with comparatively low engagement in lifesaving substance use disorder treatments (1%). The Yale Adolescent Addiction Medicine Consult Service and Adolescent Addiction Prevention Clinic are bringing critically needed services to teens and their families in hospital-based, outpatient, and school-based settings .

How CT is combating youth mental health crisis
Across the nation, the number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing. A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2021 survey released in March showed that 37 percent of high school students experienced poor mental health during the pandemic and 44 percent said they persistently felt sad or hopeless during the previous year.

Banz and the DrivSim Lab Team Show that Alcohol Drinking History May Say Something about How You Drive Even When You Are Sober
Dr. Barbara Banz recently presented research findings at the 64th Annual Scientific Conference of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. The study titled, "Alcohol use patterns and their association with sober driver vehicle control in high fidelity driving simulation," shows associations of alcohol use history and drinking patterns with a driver's ability to control their vehicle when they are driving sober. The study was published today in the journal Traffic Injury Prevention.

Emergency physicians in training are at risk for drowsy driving-related motor vehicle crashes following overnight work shifts. Trainees of all levels underestimated their true degree of sleepiness prior to initiating their drive home, while junior residents were at higher risk for adverse driving events.
