Biography

Dr. Snigdha Jain is a physician-scientist and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Her research focuses on improving long-term outcomes of older adults who survive critical illness, with particular emphasis on optimizing care delivery in the ICU and reducing overtreatments that predispose older adults to lasting functional and cognitive impairments. As Principal Investigator of multiple funded projects, she has produced a body of work spanning symptom burden, disability, rehabilitation access, and health equity in ICU survivors - with findings published in Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Network Open, Critical Care Medicine, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, among others.

Dr. Jain's research is supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the National Academies of Medicine, the Francis Family Foundation, the Yale Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, and the Yale Office of Physician Scientist Development. Her scholarly contributions have been recognized with numerous national honors, including induction as a Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence by the National Academies of Medicine (2025), induction as a Fellow of the American Thoracic Society (2025), the ATS Emerging Career Award (2024), the Health in Aging Foundation New Investigator Award from the American Geriatrics Society (2024), induction as a Butler-Williams Scholar of the NIA (2023), and the Emerging Generations Award from the American Society of Clinical Investigation (2022). She was also recognized as a Highlighted Investigator by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (2023) and named a Top Reviewer by JAMA Internal Medicine (2025). She serves as Associate Editor for Chest Critical Care.

Dr. Jain's expertise in post-ICU outcomes is internationally recognized through her leadership roles in major society guidelines. She serves as Vice-Chair of the Joint ATS/European Respiratory Society Guideline for Rehabilitation and Mobilization in the ICU, and served as Vice-Chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine Guideline for Caring for Critically Ill Older Adults.

Dr. Jain is a committed advocate for gender equity in academic medicine. She served as President of the Board of Directors of the Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center at Yale and continues to serve on its Board. Nationally, she chairs the Mentorship Sub-Committee of the American Thoracic Society Women in Critical Care Committee, expanding career development pathways for women in pulmonary and critical care. Her advocacy extends to scholarship and public voice: she has published on breastfeeding experiences of physician mothers and structural barriers facing women in academic medicine, and her commentary has been cited in The New York Times and Medscape.

Dr. Jain received her medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences - where she was awarded the Institute Medal as best medical graduate - and completed residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa, followed by fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Yale School of Medicine. She joined Yale as a postdoctoral research fellow in the NIA-funded T32 Geriatric Clinical Epidemiology and Aging-Related Research program.

Clinical Care

Overview

Snigdha Jain, MD, is a pulmonologist and critical care doctor who cares for older adults with serious illnesses, including advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Dr. Jain is especially dedicated to helping these patients manage complex symptoms while focusing on what matters most to them. “We don’t spend enough time talking to older adults about goals of care early in their illnesses,” she says. “That conversation shouldn’t be a one-time event answered in the hospital by a person’s family member.”

As an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Jain investigates how differences in healthcare delivery can affect outcomes for older adults hospitalized with critical illness.

Dr. Jain received her medical training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences before completing a residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa. She then pursued a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and joined Yale School of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow in geriatric clinical epidemiology.
