What Causes Heart Failure?

• 00:05- When you think about it
• 00:06in a very simple fashion,
• 00:08the heart is a muscle
• 00:09and its main job is to pump blood.
• 00:12But certain things can cause it to fail.
• 00:15There's genetic reasons,
• 00:16there's reasons related to valve disease,
• 00:19there's myocarditis
• 00:21where you get a viral infection that affects the heart.
• 00:23It's a final common pathway that can result
• 00:26from many, many different things.
• 00:27The most common cause is a heart attack.
• 00:30You get fatty plaque buildup inside the blood vessel
• 00:34that actually supplies the heart itself,
• 00:36and unless that blood vessel is opened up immediately,
• 00:41that muscle will die.
• 00:43The rest of the muscle that's left,
• 00:45that's not dead anymore,
• 00:46has to do extra to keep up with what's been lost.
• 00:49And overtime it can't keep up
• 00:52and that's when the heart starts to fail
• 00:53and heart failure develops.
