Medical Student Engagement Groups

Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA)

We are an organization of Asian American and Pacific Islander American (APIA) medical students committed to addressing the unique health challenges of APIA communities through education, outreach, advocacy, and service, and to providing support, mentorship, and community for APIA students at YSM.

Jewish Medical Student Association (JMSA)

The Jewish Medical Student Association (JMSA), also known as the Maimonides Society, is dedicated to fostering a welcoming and supportive Jewish community for medical and PA students. We provide opportunities to celebrate Jewish faith and culture, to serve the local community, and to connect with Jewish life at Yale and with a broader network of Jewish medical professionals nationwide. Throughout the year, JMSA hosts Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, and other programs designed to build a network of support and promote cultural understanding. JMSA welcomes students of all backgrounds who are interested in Jewish culture and community.

Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)

The Latino Medical Student Association exists to unite and empower current and future physicians through service, mentorship, and education to advocate for the improved health of the Hispanic & Latina/o/x community in the United States.

Medical Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses (MSDCI)

MSDCI at YSM is an official chapter of Medical Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses National (MSDCI National). This organization advocates an inclusive and accessible medical field for healthcare providers and trainees with disability and chronic illness. The group aims to educate future healthcare providers on disability, chronic illness, and patient-centered advocacy, serve as a source of information for issues relevant to disability and accessibility in medical education and training, explore the unique challenges of medical trainees and physicians with disability and chronic illness, and create a community of YSM students, trainees, and faculty who represent, support, and empower people with lived experiences of disability and chronic illness.

Middle Eastern and North African Medical Society (MENAMS)

The Middle Eastern and North African Medical Society (MENAMS) is dedicated to connecting MENA students and health professionals, celebrating the region’s contributions to medical sciences, and amplifying MENA voices in medicine and research. The group’s plans for initiatives include hosting student-led discussions; inviting guest speakers to include clinicians, researchers, and leaders; facilitating research connections to help students engage in clinical and biomedical research; promoting outreach to undergraduate students interested in health and research fields; and engaging with alumni through mentorship and partnerships. The society welcomes anyone from the YSM community.

Muslims in Medicine (YMIM)

Yale Muslims in Medicine serves to create a community for Muslim students to share their faith and to discuss the intersection of Islam and the practice of medicine.

Native American / Indigenous Medical Student Association

Native American / Indigenous Medical Student Association serves to create a community for Native American / Indigenous medical students.

OutPatient

OutPatient is the student group that brings together the LGBTQIA+ community and allies at Yale’s health professional schools. At YSM, OutPatient has dedicated its efforts to LGBTQIA+ community building, healthcare issues, visibility, and education. Our events and programs seek to engage the LGBTQIA+ community, from discussions about being an LGBTQIA+-identifying health care practitioner, to engaging students in training opportunities about the specific concerns related to LGBTQIA+ patients. We organize speaker series, support conference attendance, contribute to LGBTQIA+ curricular material, and facilitate networking and social events. We also collaborate with LGBTQIA+ organizations in New Haven and with YSM faculty interested in LGBTQIA+ issues.

South Asian Medically-oriented Students Association (SAMoSA)

SAMoSA aims to both highlight South Asian culture and discuss medical challenges faced by South Asian health care providers and patients alike. While it primarily focuses on the medical field, this group is open to any member of the graduate community.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA)

Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future medical students who are committed to serving underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.

Yale First generation / Low Income (YFLI)

The Mission of the Yale First generation/Low Income is to build a more welcoming community, to advocate for mentorship, to help first generation American/college students and low-income students navigate medical school and the medical profession, and to promote a more diverse recruitment of future medical students.

Program Participation

Our programs are open to all members of the Yale School of Medicine community and participation is voluntary. We welcome engagement from students, staff, and faculty from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives.
