Dr. Julie Goodwin has been selected for the 2023-24 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in Finland.

Julie Goodwin, MD, has been selected for the 2023-24 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in Finland. The award, the Fulbright-Saastamoinen Foundation Distinguished Chair in Health Sciences 2023-24 Award, consists of two shorter visits, including 4-6 weeks this August and again in 2024, at the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, Finland. Dr. Goodwin will work closely with Jarmo Jääskeläinen, Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of The Institute of Clinical Medicine at University of Eastern Finland.

While in Finland, she’ll spend about a quarter of her time teaching medical students and the rest of her time on research. Her research will focus on the relationship between immune cell profiles and blood pressure in a cohort of Finnish children. The highly homogeneous nature of the Finnish population will enable a better understanding of environmental influences on the development of pediatric hypertension.

While the research and studies will likely take longer than her official time in Finland, she hopes the connections made through the program allow longer-term collaboration and information sharing.

The Fulbright Finland Foundation mission is to expand Finnish-North American collaboration through exchanges of talent and knowledge. Its vision is to empower the minds that will find global solutions to tomorrow’s challenges by fostering academic and professional expertise and excellence in leadership.
