Meet Yale clinical fellow Jenny Chen, DO, who learned about her passion for medicine through music.

Why did you choose medicine?

As a premed major at UC Berkeley, I stumbled upon an opportunity to volunteer and perform for patients through UC San Francisco’s Music is Good Medicine program. This was my first honest exposure to caring for patients from a nonclinical lens, and it led to my passion for medicine.

Why did you choose Yale Department of Internal Medicine for your fellowship?

I was struck by the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship’s innovative curriculum and by visionary faculty members like Dr. Laura Morrison, who directs the fellowship program.

What was your path to Yale?

For most of my life, I stuck to the West Coast (specifically, the Bay Area, in California), where I attended UC Berkeley as an integrative biology major. I decided to test out the winters at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and realized that the weather was too cold for my West Coast self. I moved back to Northern California to be a family medicine resident at John Muir Health.

With the support of my friends and family, I matched at Yale for my fellowship.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I performed twice at Oracle Park for the San Francisco Giants.
