Biography
Cameron Gettel, MD, MHS, FACEP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, a Clinical Investigator at the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, and the Co-Director of the Yale Emergency Scholars (YES) Fellowship. Dr. Gettel aims to advance the understanding of emergency department care transitions in the growing geriatric population through the identification and development of patient- and caregiver-reported outcome measures and then to design, implement, and validate innovative care transition strategies and interventions to improve clinical outcomes. Dr. Gettel was selected as the 2023-2025 National Academy of Medicine / American Board of Emergency Medicine fellow and his work has been funded by the NIH/NIA GEMSSTAR R03 mechanism, the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory, the Alzheimer's Association, the Emergency Medicine Foundation, the Yale OAIC Pepper Center, the Geriatric Emergency care Applied Research (GEAR) Networks, the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation, and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation. At CORE, Dr. Gettel leads work funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop the next generation of performance measures across multiple care settings.
Dr. Gettel earned his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Elizabethtown College and his Doctor of Medicine from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Most recently, he completed Emergency Medicine residency at Brown University, where he served as chief resident, and the National Clinician Scholars Program at Yale University.

Overview
Cameron Gettel, MD, is an emergency medicine physician who cares for people with urgent or life-threatening conditions. He focuses on improving care transitions for older adults, including developing ways to gather input from patients and caregivers to enhance recovery and support after leaving the emergency department.
“I was drawn to emergency medicine because of the dynamic variety in clinical care, where every shift presents new challenges and the unexpected,” Dr. Gettel says. "I find it incredibly rewarding to be present during a critical time in people's lives, providing immediate care when it matters most.”
As an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Gettel studies strategies that streamline the transition from hospital to home, with the goal of preventing complications and helping patients maintain independence. He has been recognized by the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association for his work on improving outcomes for older adults.
Dr. Gettel received his medical training from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, pursued a residency in emergency medicine at Brown University, and completed a research fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.
