Clinical Care

Overview

Sidney Bogardus, MD, is a gastroenterologist who treats a broad range of diseases, from acid reflux, Barrett’s esophagus, and swallowing conditions, to celiac disease, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, and colon polyps.

“Caring for patients is the most rewarding thing I can imagine doing,” Dr. Bogardus says. “It is immensely rewarding to help relieve symptoms that can have a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life—to both help them recover from significant acute illness episodes and support them in learning to live with chronic medical conditions that we treat over time.”

Dr. Bogardus was attracted to gastroenterology as a specialty by the breadth of conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract, including acute problems like bleeding ulcers and chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. He performs colonoscopies and upper endoscopies, and provides many specific tests and treatments, such as the Bravo pH test for stomach acid, and hemorrhoidal band ligation, a minimally invasive technique that stops blood flow to the hemorrhoid.

In addition to caring for patients, his research focuses on such matters as patient preference. He has published articles in the New England Journalof Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. He also serves as the associate chief for Network Development of Digestive Health at Yale New Haven Health, and as the chief of Gastroenterology at the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital.
