Biography

Caroline Hendry, PhD, MBA, is Scientific Director and Advisor to the Chair of the Department of Genetics at Yale School of Medicine. She works alongside the Chair and the Chief of Medical Genetics to shape the department’s research and clinical priorities, and leads many of the initiatives that deliver them. She conducted an in-depth strategic review of the department’s clinical DNA Diagnostics Laboratory and continues to advise its leadership on revenue growth and operational performance. She serves on the Dean’s committee for AI-driven personalized medicine and, with the Chief of Medical Genetics, guides the planning and execution of its pilot in familial hypercholesterolemia. With the Chairs of Clinical Genetics and Pediatrics, she is now building a Yale-wide effort to bring genetic therapies from discovery to patients.

Caroline founded and directs the Office for Strategy & Research Development, whose mission is to increase scientific discovery and impact across the department. The Office has partnered with faculty to secure more than $100 million in federal funding, from NIH Director’s Pioneer and New Innovator Awards to large clinical-translational programs. It develops industry partnerships with Yale Ventures and philanthropic opportunities with the School’s development office. It also leads the department’s community engagement and communications strategy, and conceives and directs its major events.

Originally from Brisbane, Caroline trained in developmental genetics and cellular reprogramming at the University of Queensland, Australia, and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. She then spent five years as Reviews Editor for stem cells and regeneration at the journal Development before joining Yale in 2018. She holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management.

Research

Overview

My research interest is in how genetic discoveries become diagnoses and therapies for patients, and the translational and regulatory pathways that get them there.

In genetic therapies, I am a Co-Investigator on the NIH-funded program developing the STEP non-viral CRISPR delivery platform for neurogenetic disease, where I share responsibility for regulatory strategy, manufacturing and pre-IND research. My recent article with Jiangbing Zhou and Yong-hui Jiang (Nature Genetics, 2026) sets out how the FDA’s plausible mechanism pathway applies across the rare disease landscape.

In diagnosis and population health, I am interested in how genetic testing can be scaled beyond the specialist clinic and delivered within a health system. I am a Co-Investigator on the Yale Diagnostic Center of Excellence for Undiagnosed Diseases, part of the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Network, and on the Yale Population Genomic Screening Pilot. I also partner with Yong-hui Jiang to guide one of the Dean’s precision medicine pilots, which tests this model in familial hypercholesterolemia, using AI to identify at-risk patients in the electronic health record.

I have also written about how academic departments can structure scientific leadership (Cell, 2023).
