Members of Family Violence Research Lab Wear Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 20, 2023

Researchers in the Family Violence Research Lab at Yale School of Medicine wore purple on October 20, 2023 to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to Tami Sullivan, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the lab, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. Almost half of all women experience psychological abuse, and 40 percent experience physical abuse, sexual abuse, or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Approximately 12 million people are affected by domestic violence every year.

Participating in the lab’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month commemoration were Melissa Schick, PhD; Alexis Alfano, BS; Ashley Clayton, MA; Tami Sullivan, PhD; Ana Hernandez, BS; Alexandrya Pope, MS; Carolina Price, MPA; Grace Mastalli-Lowther, MA; and Jaimie Meyer, MD.
