Biography

Dr. Zhu currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine while leading cross-functional, global real-world evidence (RWE) initiatives at Boston Scientific. Her work focuses on leveraging real-world data (RWD) and advanced analytics to generate actionable insights that inform clinical development, regulatory strategy, and healthcare value demonstration across diverse therapeutic franchises.

Katie has held leadership roles across academia, industry, and government, applying advanced technologies to improve healthcare outcomes. She is a Governance Committee member of the U.S. National Evaluation System for health Technology (NEST), an initiative led by the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) to enhance the evaluation of medical devices using RWE. She has also contributed to program organization and operations for the National Institutes of Health Bridge2AI Consortium, the Federal eHealth Exchange through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Digital Healthcare Research Program at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Previously, she served as the inaugural Executive Director of the Center for Biomedical Data Science at Yale University and sat on the External Advisory Board for the Center for Advanced Technology at Columbia University. She currently serves as an external advisor to the Downstate Health Sciences University Health Informatics Program.

Her prior industry positions include Physician Scientist Lead at the Center for Computational Health at IBM T.J. Watson Research Headquarters, Clinical Project Manager at Philips, Associate Medical Director at Pfizer, and Chief Medical Information Officer at Kforce Government Solutions and Macannie. She is the recipient of the Philips Star Employee Award, IBM A-Level Scientific Accomplishment Award, IBM Management Choice Award, IBM Invention Achievement Awards, and the AMIA and e-Health Distinguished Paper Awards. She is the co-author of 13 granted patents, several of which have been reported by New Scientist and the Belgian daily De Morgen. She co-edited the Springer book "Personal Health Informatics" and Elsevier book "Digital Health."

Her leadership and vision contributed to the successful organization and execution of many high-impact events, notably the NIH Bridge2AI Leadership Summits, the International Conferences on Context Sensitive Health Informatics, the AI for Drug Discovery Workshop at the 22nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, and the Yale Annual Single Cell Symposia.

She currently chairs the International Medical Informatics Association’s Organizational and Social Issues in Healthcare Working Group and has served as Co-Chair of the American Medical Informatics Association’s Global Health Informatics Working Group and Vice President of Membership for the Consumer and Pervasive Health Informatics Working Group. Katie has been elected to the fellowship of the American College of Medical Informatics, the American Medical Informatics Association, and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics.

In addition to her clinical training in Anesthesiology, Katie holds an M.S. in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University, supported by a U.S. National Library of Medicine fellowship.
