  • 00:00- My goal when I came to Yale,
  • 00:02which is really coming to fruition now,
  • 00:05was to be the link between basic science
  • 00:10and the clinic in terms of cellular therapies.
  • 00:13So my main clinical responsibility
  • 00:16is to run the laboratory in the hospital
  • 00:20that provides the cells
  • 00:22to patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation,
  • 00:25and on the research side to provide the cells
  • 00:28to patients undergoing clinical trials in cellular therapy.
  • 00:32So my medical expertise is really in
  • 00:36more of the basic science
  • 00:38of what underlies health and disease
  • 00:41and understanding disease states
  • 00:43and the mechanisms by which they happen.
  • 00:45And medically I help the clinicians
  • 00:48to interpret laboratory tests.
  • 00:51So what makes someone a clinician scientist?
  • 00:54I think it's just that they are somebody
  • 00:55who not only is thinking about what's at the forefront
  • 00:58and what's best for my patient,
  • 00:59but how can I be one of the people
  • 01:03who helps to bring the novel therapies to the patient?
  • 01:06So that they're thinking not just as an academic,
  • 01:09which is basically a scientist,
  • 01:11but they are also implementing
  • 01:13some of this scientific insight
  • 01:16by bringing novel therapies to the patients.
