Research

Using classic techniques to understand human physiology such as euglycemic, hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic clamps coupled with advanced imaging modalities including 1H and 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopy, functional MRI, and PET-CT imaging, our research is focused on understanding the impact of obesity, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and aging on cerebral activity and energetics.

  • Question 1: What are the effects of frequent low blood sugars, chronic high blood sugars, and glycemic variability on the human brain?
  • Question 2: What is the impact of obesity on brain glucose metabolism and what are the implications for energy homeostasis?
  • Question 3: What is the role of other energy sources and sugars in the brain?
