Overview
Sarah Schellhorn, MD, specializes in breast medical oncology.
“I love taking care of patients and getting to know them and their families over time during a difficult diagnosis,” Dr. Schellhorn says. “A cancer diagnosis is a terrifying thing to receive. It is my job to provide evidence-based treatment recommendations, but I also want my patients to understand why these recommendations are being made.”
She says she also assures patients of the skilled physician team with whom she works, which includes breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, and pathologists. “I tell patients that I am here to listen to fears, discuss alternatives, and try to help navigate the patient and their family through all decisions that need to be made,” she says.
Dr. Schellhorn is the chief ambulatory officer of Smilow Cancer Hospital and helps to direct clinical operations of the cancer center at York Street. She is also involved with the Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) Center within Yale School of Medicine, with a specific interest in chemotherapy regimens used in the treatment of breast cancer and how they are used in clinical practice.
