- 00:03Medicine is a team sport. We
- 00:06really have to work together.
- 00:07You have to really understand the
- 00:10people that you're working with
- 00:11and the people that you're trying
- 00:13to improve their health in order
- 00:16to really deliver outstanding,
- 00:17high quality health to
- 00:19everyone. Yale resides in the
- 00:20New Haven community and this
- 00:22community is such a powerhouse.
- 00:24It's an incredibly diverse town.
- 00:26It's a town with a big
- 00:28heart. We really try and foster.
- 00:31Be working with agencies,
- 00:32with health organizations in the
- 00:34community to make sure that you're
- 00:36truly embedded and understand New Haven.
- 00:39Yale students have a
- 00:40lot of different opportunities,
- 00:42whether they're involved
- 00:43with health education,
- 00:44health care in the community,
- 00:46or also opportunities
- 00:47to learn about research.
- 00:48One of the ones that really
- 00:51impresses me is the Haven Clinic.
- 00:54Haven is
- 00:55a student run free clinic.
- 00:56We see about 400 to 500 unique
- 00:59patients each year providing primary
- 01:01care and wrap around social services
- 01:03including legal services,
- 01:04social services, lab services,
- 01:06reproductive health services that
- 01:07help provide kind of comprehensive
- 01:09care for patients. All of our
- 01:11patients are uninsured and the majority
- 01:13are Spanish speaking and it's a
- 01:16really great opportunity for students
- 01:17to get involved with marginalized
- 01:19communities within New Haven.
- 01:22The Neighborhood Health Project is
- 01:24another free clinic that focuses
- 01:26a little bit more on preventative
- 01:28screening and is more mobile based.
- 01:30The engagement of the students
- 01:32in New Haven, it's not
- 01:34the engagement of somebody from the
- 01:36outside engaging in the community,
- 01:38is community participation.
- 01:39And that starts from understanding
- 01:41that during the years that we're here,
- 01:43we are not just at Yale,
- 01:45we are members of the New Haven community.
