YM@Work: Department sets the pace for taking fun at work seriously

The Yale Medicine Revenue Integrity and Analytics department manages serious financial matters every day. "There's a lot of work that's done here with revenue and getting to the root cause of why claims are denied," says Lisa Hines, associate director of Revenue Integrity and Analytics. "We look at trending, we look at working with carriers and contracting and compliance. We're dealing with insurance companies, so there’s challenges with that, and then there's Epic and all the challenges that Epic has brought upon us."

Given the busy and often high-stress pace, Hines and her team have put in place several initiatives to keep spirits high and communication open. They run a trivia contest each month and decorate cubicles for various holidays. Other initiatives include:

  • The Good News Box, which gives employees a chance to share positive personal or professional news
  • The Sunshine Group, which meets once a month to socialize outside of the office
  • The Donkey Kong Initiative, which takes a fresh approach to getting post-holiday, backed-up work queues at eight days or below

"All of this is important, it's important to my team to know that we're a family here," Hines says. "We spend a lot of time here at work. It's important to know that we're there for each other. So we build off of each other’s strengths. We try to make sure everyone knows that we'll get through stressful times together because we're all going to help each other through. So we do a lot of different things to build that up."
