The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Dr. Henry Hsia as recipient of the inaugural Team Science Award. Dr. Hsia is a Professor of Surgery (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery), renowned for his clinical expertise and research interest in regenerative wound healing.

His winning proposal, “Harnessing cell-specific exosomes to promote tissue repair in acute surgical and chronic non-healing wound,” leverages the multidisciplinary expertise of faculty from across the Yale Medical School. Partnering with Dr. Hsia on the project are Dr. Valerie Horsley, Associate Professor, Departments of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Dermatology, and Dr. Themis Kyriakides, Professor, Departments of Pathology and Biomedical Engineering.

“Dr. Hsia has assembled an exceptionally strong team of three researchers, each working on independent projects with synergistic aims to address an important problem in wound care. Our hope is that this award will help to nucleate the team and actively partner them on grant submissions, with a federal PO1 as the ultimate goal, said Dr. Peter Gruber, Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Surgery.

Introduced in September of 2022 as part of the Department’s academic development initiative, the Surgery Team Science Award was conceived as a mechanism to catalyze high-potential, early-stage research teams toward the development of U and P-type NIH mechanisms. Dr. Hsia is the inaugural recipient of the $100K grant.

The Department plans to announce a second round of Team Science Award funding in fall of 2023.
