Advanced Fellowship Training

Advanced fellowship training refers to the one or more years of focused training in a specific area of cardiology, in addition to the core ABIM/ACGME required foundation in general cardiology. Training is available in a variety of clinical and research areas and is tailored to the goals and skills of each fellow. The tracks listed below represent common sequences of training, but modifications can be made if approved by the program director.


Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Dr. Robert Elder, Director

The program is designed as a 24-month experience available to graduates who have completed a fellowship in adult OR pediatric cardiology. The program will run 24 months and accept 1 fellow per 2-year block. The aim of this fellowship is to train cardiologists with a focused interest in care of the adult patient with congenital heart disease to become world-class clinicians, researchers, and leaders in cardiovascular medicine. The program will take advantage of the resources of YNHH and YNHCH and offer fellows training in congenital heart disease, advanced imaging, heart failure, arrhythmia management, pulmonary hypertension and cardiac cath and surgical management of adults with congenital heart disease. The program will include 6 months of research time. At the completion of the program, successful fellows will be able to sit for board certification (though ABIM) in ACHD and function independently as an expert in ACHD. Candidates interested in the program are encouraged to contact Dr. Elder as well as note this interest on application personal statements to either the general pediatrics or general cardiology fellowship programs.

Advanced Cardiac Imaging

Drs. Lauren Baldassarre and Edward Miller, Acting Directors

The goal for this track is for individuals to attain expertise in at least one imaging modality (Level III), advanced exposure in the other modalities and to gain appropriate investigative skills for a career in academic cardiology. Training will take place at Yale New Haven Hospital. In general, two years of training is recommended. The fellow will identify a research mentor and project, to be conducted over a one to two-year period. The particular structure of the training sequence will vary, depending on the goals of the trainee.

For those interested in truly advanced training in cardiovascular imaging, funding is available for two to three years of research training in imaging technology, and molecular and translational imaging, through an NIH-funded T32 training grant as part of the Yale Translational Research Imaging Center (Y-TRIC). This training can involve: hands-on research experience on clinical 1.5T and 3T MR magnets for pre-clinical or clinical research, pre-clinical experience with microCT, microSPECT/CT, and high-resolution mouse echocardiography, pre-clinical or clinical experience with PET/CT, SPECT/CT, or 3D ultrasound, or pre-clinical training in the ranostic multi-modality probe development. Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation

Dr. Tariq Ahmad, Director

This ACGME accredited program is appropriate for individuals who have completed a three-year cardiology fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease. The mission of the Yale Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology fellowship is to provide comprehensive academic and clinical training in the assessment and management of advanced heart failure, including cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, and heart failure cardiovascular research. The fellowship includes two trainees over a 12-month training program which provides broad clinical exposure to acute and chronic heart failure care in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Fellows will achieve level three training in heart failure and be eligible for ABIM board certification in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation.

Electrophysiology

Dr. Alan Enriquez, Director

This ACGME certified program is a two-year program and requires completion of a three-year fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine. At the completion of this program, individuals will achieve level 3 training in electrophysiology and will be eligible for ABIM board certification in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Interventional Cardiology

Dr. Robert Attaran, Director

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited program that is performed upon completion of a three-year fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease. The main objective of the Fellowship Training Program in Interventional Cardiology is to provide an academically and clinically rigorous training program for the cardiology trainee to obtain the necessary skills and judgment in cardiac interventional procedures. External applicants will receive equal consideration. Applications are via ERAS.

The fellowship program includes four trainees for the twelve-month training program and offers unequaled opportunities in an array of complex coronary procedures. A second year of training is available to select individuals via an application process with specific interests in peripheral or structural heart disease interventions. Individuals will achieve level 3 training in interventional cardiology and be eligible for ABIM board certification in both Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. Fellows are mentored to present or publish their research.

Endovascular Interventions

Dr. Robert Attaran, Director

This is a one-year fellowship designed to provide expertise in peripheral vascular interventions and medical therapy. This is usually completed following a three-year core cardiology fellowship. Fellows will be involved in all aspects of peripheral vascular disease care, including intensive procedural exposure, outpatient evaluation, inpatient management and non-invasive imaging. Didactic teaching from vascular surgeons, radiologists and cardiologists forms part of the curriculum. Research opportunities and mentorship are an integral part of the program. There will be opportunities to assist the fellow become eligible for the RPVI certification. The application is now open for the next fellowship program.

Structural Heart Disease Interventions

Dr. John K. Forrest

This is a one-year fellowship program designed to provide advanced training in interventions in structural heart disease (e.g. TAVR, etc). This program includes intensive laboratory procedural experience as well as inpatient and outpatient care exposure. Individuals will obtain advanced training in these structural interventions, following completion of a previous coronary interventional cardiology fellowship. The application is now open for the next fellowship program.

Cardio-Oncology

Dr. Lauren Baldassarre, Director

The program is a 12-month training experience available to graduates of a fellowship in adult cardiology and will accept one fellow per year. This advanced fellowship will provide expert and dedicated training in cardio-oncology with the aim to train enthusiastic fellows to become outstanding academic leaders in this rapidly growing field. The program will include robust training in a busy outpatient clinical care environment, inpatient consults, didactic teaching, and clinical research. Additional opportunities also exist in translational research and advanced cardiac imaging, which can be tailored to the candidate’s prior experience and career goals. The Yale Cardio-Oncology Program is an interdisciplinary partnership between the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Smilow Cancer Hospital, allowing for an integrated experience for the fellow and broad exposure to collaboration with oncologists, including dedicated sub-specialty oncology clinics. Completion of this program will provide graduating fellows with the qualifications of an expert cardio-oncologist to start or direct their own program, as defined by level III training (J Am Coll Cardiol. 2020 Nov 10;76(19):2267-2281. doi: 10.1016/j.jacc.2020.08.079).
