History of Tissue Culture
The tissue culture core laboratory was founded in 1991 concomitant with the opening of the Molecular Cardiobiology Program at the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine (BCMM). Its mission, which has remained unchanged, is to support research into vascular biology by providing well characterized cultures of vascular cells to Yale investigators while keeping costs limited by operating as a not-for-profit facility.
The mainstay of the operation is generation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, a standard preparation widely used in vascular research.
The Molecular Cardiobiology Program was terminated in 2000 with the creation of the Interdepartmental program in Vascular Biology and Transplantation (VBT, since renamed as Vascular Biology and Therapeutics.) VBT took over operation of the tissue culture core laboratory from BCMM in 2004 and the operation was moved from BCMM to the Amistad Building in 2007, concomitant with the relocation of VBT.
