GSH in ocular development and against alcohol-induced liver injury
GSH is an important antioxidant. It modulates the function of redox-sensitive proteins, many of which are involved in the control of cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and apoptosis. Our laboratory has demonstrated GSH to be crucial in eye development. In addition, we have found serendipitously that GSH depletion protects the liver against ethanol-induced steatosis. Projects are underway to investigate the pathways through which changes in GSH are influencing the eye or liver. These studies involve the use of Gclm and Gclc knockout mice and state-of-the-art approaches (including metabolomics, RNA-seq, and tissue imaging mass spectrometry)
