Clinical Care

Overview

Denyse Lutchmansingh, MD, is a specialist for Yale Medicine Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, and a general pulmonologist who evaluates patients with breathing difficulties and treats a broad range of conditions, including asthma, COPD/emphysema, interstitial lung disease, and, more recently, patients who have pulmonary complications after COVID-19.

Dr. Lutchmansingh says she was inspired to become a doctor when she saw members of her own family struggling with chronic diseases when she was growing up. “I wanted to help people, and medicine was the way to do that,” she says. “I really loved pulmonary and critical care, because there is the opportunity to see many patients improve.”

Advances with inhalers and additional medications including biologics, which are produced from living organisms, have made a tremendous impact in the care of many pulmonary conditions, she says.

But what she likes best about her work is the ability to develop long-term relationships with her patients. “I value the long-term interaction and the opportunity to see their trajectory,” Dr. Lutchmansingh says. Many patients do well, and for those who struggle more with their disease, she can support them as they figure out what is important to them in making decisions about their care. “You can make a lot of difference for people,” Dr. Lutchmansingh says.
