The Fucito Lab

The Fucito Lab is committed to reducing the public health burden of substance use with a particular focus on alcohol and tobacco use. To achieve this aim, we conduct innovative clinical research in three key areas:

  • examine factors that promote use to characterize unique risk profiles and identify novel intervention targets
  • develop and test effective strategies that reduce substance use and related harm
  • obtain scientific evidence to inform policy and healthcare implementation

We utilize a range of research methods including clinical trials, longitudinal observational studies, experience sampling with diaries and wearables, qualitative and user-centered design methods, and implementation science.

Dr. Fucito, a Clinical Psychologist, is both an active researcher and hospital-based clinician/administrator, and an expert in alcohol and tobacco use and treatment. She has conducted seminal research in several areas including sleep health as a risk factor and intervention target for alcohol and tobacco use, wearable biofeedback interventions that integrate multiple health biometrics, e-cigarette cessation, and oral nicotine pouches. Additionally, she has served on multiple tobacco treatment clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements.

Tobacco Treatment Service at Smilow Cancer Hospital

Dr. Fucito directs this Service, which provides medical and counseling support statewide to adults seeking help for any form of tobacco or nicotine product use.

Individuals referred to the Service can participate in the regular program or clinical trials for which they may be eligible. To date, the Service has supported 10+ clinical trials including treatment for e-cigarette use, smoking cessation prior to cancer surgery, and switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes or oral nicotine pouches.

Dr. Fucito is a faculty supervisor and advisor for the Yale Doctoral Internship in Clinical and Community Psychology, Yale New Haven Hospital Behavioral Medicine Placement Site. Trainees of this program can complete scholarly projects through the Fucito Lab.
