Amid Opioid Overdose Crisis, Yale Program in Addiction Medicine Advises State on Drug Company Settlement Spending
The majority of the estimated $206 billion resulting from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement have not gone to address smoking or public health. Following a similar settlement of a multi-state litigation, the state of Connecticut is expecting around $600 million to address the state’s opioid overdose crisis, which resulted in 1,340 overdose deaths in 2023 alone. To avoid the experience of the Tobacco funds, Yale faculty are proactively providing recommendations on how to spend these funds.

Several Yale Program in Addiction Medicine Faculty Members Receive New NIH HEAL Initiative Awards
The National Institutes of Health describes the Helping End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative as “an aggressive, trans-agency effort to speed scientific solutions to stem the national opioid public health crisis.” Initiated in 2018, the 2.5 billion-dollar initiative funds more than 1,000 projects across the country to advance understanding and treatment of opioid, other substance use disorders and pain. Among recent awardees are several core faculty members in the Yale Program in Addiction Medicine.

The Overdose Crisis: Harm Reduction in U.S. Health Policy
On May 20, Yale’s Department of Internal Medicine and Program in Addiction Medicine hosted its first event on Clubhouse, a social networking app that allows members to gather in audio chat rooms and discuss issues in a live podcast style. The event focused on the drug overdose in the United States and incorporation of harm reduction into U.S. health policy and practice.
