Biography

Maxwell (Mac) has been actively involved in developing AI models and applications and has a keen interest in the intersection of AI, ophthalmology, and entrepreneurship. His goal is to improve care by serving as a bridge between physician and AI expertise.

During residency, Mac built several AI applications, including a program to automate resident call scheduling, a deep learning model to detect retinal biomarkers of systemic vascular disease, the first public generative AI chatbot for eye care, and a tool to streamline residency application reviews. He was an invited speaker at the Asia Pacific Vitreoretinal Society in Singapore. In recognition of his work to accelerate multimodal AI research in ophthalmology, he received a Blavatnik award in collaboration with faculty member Qingyu Chen.

Before residency at Yale, he attended medical school at the University of Southern California, where he was first author on an article that was featured on the cover of Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment, & Disease Monitoring for detecting changes in vascular flow on Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in preclinical Alzheimer's disease. He received the award of Excellence in Research by a Dean’s Research Scholar, which is given annually to recognize the senior medical student who has conducted the most outstanding research during a dedicated research year.

Mac graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University, where he was a member of the varsity rowing team.
