Trial of Exercise and Lifestyle in Women with Ovarian Cancer (TEAL)

This UO1 study is in collaboration with University of Miami as part of the Exercise and Nutrition Interventions to Improve Cancer Treatment-related Outcomes (ENICTO) consortium of the NCI.

This ongoing RCT is designed to test the effect of a six-month nutrition and physical activity intervention on rates of chemotherapy completion as well as treatment-related side effects and changes in biomarkers, body composition and patient-reported outcomes, in 200 women with ovarian cancer receiving chemotherapy.

LEAN Studies

The Lifestyle, Exercise and Nutrition Study (LEAN Study) In Breast Cancer Survivors

This pilot study examined the impact of a six-month RCT of healthy eating and exercise weight loss program on weight change, diet quality, physical activity, and quality of life in 151 breast cancer survivors. Effectiveness of in-person vs telephone counseling vs usual care was evaluated. Healthy breast tissue biopsies were obtained in 51 women and examined for changes in certain metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers and body composition.

The Lifestyle, Exercise and Nutrition Study ( LEAN Study) Self-Guided for Breast Cancer Survivors

This RCT evaluated a self-guided lifestyle intervention delivered via evidence-based materials versus a waitlist group on changes in body weight, diet quality, physical activity, and quality of life among 205 breast cancer survivors

We adapted our supervised in-person/telephone Lifestyle, Exercise and Nutrition (LEAN) lifestyle program for breast cancer survivors to an unsupervised, self-guided program, delivered via printed materials and online videos.

The Lifestyle, Exercise and Nutrition Early after Diagnosis (LEANer) study

This RO1 study tested the effect of a one-year nutrition and physical activity intervention vs usual care on rates of chemotherapy completion and adherence to endocrine therapy, as well as treatment-related side effects and changes in biomarkers, body composition and patient-reported outcomes, in 173 women with early stage breast cancer receiving chemotherapy.

Women’s Activity & Lifestyle Study in Connecticut (WALC)

This RO1 study examined the impact of a six-month RCT of exercise vs attention control on change in quality of life and fatigue among 144 ovarian cancer survivors.

Hormones & Physical Exercise (HOPE)

This RO1 study examined the impact of a yearlong RCT of exercise vs attention control on arthralgia severity among 121 breast cancer survivors receiving an AI and reporting arthralgia.
