Simulation in Surgical Education
Several novel platforms are utilized and tested for efficacy and reproducibility in aiding surgical education for training tomorrow’s surgeons.
Dry Lab The Dry Lab utilizes artificial tissue that accurately simulates the arteries and veins in the body and allows a realistic “tissue-feel” while carrying out the various anastomotic techniques and valve replacements and repairs. Wet LabFood safe animal tissue is used to simulate more complex cardiac surgical procedures, such as aortic valve replacement, root replacement, valve sparing root replacement, mitral/tricuspid valve repair and replacements in the heart. These types of tissue/heart even allows an artificial heart pump (LVAD) to be implanted in the simulation lab and allows the participants to learn the principles and technical aspects necessary to implant a LVAD.
