Clinical Aim

The Program in Hospital Medicine aims to substantially contribute to the inpatient care of medicine inpatients at Yale New Haven Hospital and serve as a resource within the Section and Department for information regarding safe and efficient medical care.

Faculty in our Program divide their clinical time among a diverse range of team structures and patient acuity. We attend on the Hospital Medicine Firm, the Medical Step-Down Unit, and the Northeast Medical Group’s (NEMG) Hospitalist service.

This is an innovative educational and clinical care model shared between the program and NEMG in which hospitalist faculty are paired with Traditional medicine residency PGY-3 learners in an “apprenticeship” model. This rotation unites curricular content from published hospital medicine competencies and Yale New Haven Health System care signature pathways. This Firm also partners closely with the Generalist Firm (another Firm within the Section of General Internal Medicine), together which aim to provide coordinated care for patients who receive outpatient medical care in the New Haven Primary Care Consortium (NHPCC).

Yale’s version of an Intermediate Care Unit (IMC), the SDU is a closed, 15-bed unit physically located in our medical intensive care unit (MICU). Patient acuity is high, and two faculty supervise PGY-2 and PGY-3 trainees from our Traditional and Primary Care residency training programs.

Yale’s NEMG hospitalist service is a high-volume, high-turnover clinical experience in which faculty work closely with advance practice providers (APPs) in a diverse array of clinical experiences which include: the emergency department, observation units, medicine consults, and general medical wards. Additional opportunities include admitting shifts and rapid response team (RRT) coverage.
