Welcome from the Co-Directors

Since 2011, the Program for Biomedical Ethics at Yale School of Medicine has served as a nexus for a community of individuals from the medical campus and beyond who share a common interest in medical ethics education, research, and practice. We welcome you on behalf of the Program, our associate directors, Dr. Jack Hughes and Dr. Sarah Hull, and our manager, Ms. Karen P. Kolb, MFA, APR.

Our affiliated faculty and staff are drawn from Yale School of Medicine as well as the Schools of Nursing, Law, Divinity, Epidemiology and Public Health, Yale New Haven Hospital, the Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics, and The Hastings Center. Our faculty are known nationally and internationally in the field of bioethics. We are very pleased to work in close cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics on the main Yale campus, led by Drs. Steve Latham and Lori Bruce, and with the Center for Clinical Ethics located within the hospital and health system, led by Dr. Ben Tolchin. Additionally, we are pleased to host the Yale Bioethics Lab, led by Dr. Jennifer Miller.

Our program coordinates the ethics education of Yale medical students over the course of their four years, including assistance for those who choose to write their thesis in this area. In addition, educational programs are provided for other members of the Yale medical community, such as journal clubs, working groups and special conferences. Our Bioethics Lab and faculty are also available to support faculty and students conducting bioethics related research or research which includes an ethics component. In this regard, support for grant writing as well as conducting qualitative, normative, and empirical research and analyses can be requested.

Each academic year, we have a wonderful slate of local and invited speakers for our twice monthly evening seminar series. You are welcome to join us for one, some, or all of our evening seminars. In addition to great talks led by faculty from all over the country, these seminars provide an opportunity to be part of the bioethics community at Yale and, a nice light dinner on us! The schedule is posted and updated on our website. We’d be pleased to add you to our mailing list if you contact our program manager, Karen P. Kolb, MFA, APR.

We welcome hearing from you with any inquiries or suggestions regarding biomedical ethics scholarship here at Yale School of Medicine. We invite you to join us for a seminar, research collaboration, or much more, as a fellow student, teacher, scholar or any combination of these.
