Global Health Initiative: Environmental Influences | Infectious Diseases
Professor Diuk-Wasser is interested in modeling the eco-epidemiological drivers of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, using intensive field and laboratory-derived data. Under the conceptual framework of landscape epidemiology and using the tools of geographic information systems, remote sensing and spatial statistics, she predicts human disease foci by modeling the distribution of pathogens, vectors and hosts. Within these areas of risk, she is currently focusing on environmental drivers of pathogen transmission dynamics, with the ultimate goal of generating spatio-temporal predictions of risk. Current areas of interest include identifying environmental drivers of tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease and babesiosis; investigating the effects of climate and water insecurity in dengue transmission in Colombia and integrating remotely sensed and census data to map high deprivation areas in Salvador, Brazil. Past research includes modeling irrigated malaria in Mali and the role of host diversity in West Nile virus transmission. Other research interests include landscape ecology, population genetics, behavioral ecology and conservation biology.
