Section of Emergency Medicine

Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) is a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the prevention, diagnosis and management of a wide variety of acute illnesses and injuries affecting infants, children and adolescents. This field also encompasses an understanding of the development of prehospital and in-hospital emergency medical systems and the skills necessary for this development.

We provide comprehensive emergency services for over 40,000 infants, children and adolescents annually, brought to the Pediatric Emergency Department of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital for wide variety of complaints including:

• Fever
• Respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses
• Poisonings, including environmental toxins
• Major and minor trauma, including Head Injury
• Suspected child abuse and neglect
• Abdominal emergencies
• Behavioral and psychiatric emergencies
