Water & Health on Long Island Study

The Water & Health on Long Island Study is an environmental and health study that is part of the Yale Superfund Research Center.

What are the study goals?

  • Better understand the quality of drinking water on Long Island
  • Understand how levels of environmental chemicals, particularly 1,4-dioxane, in drinking water affect levels of these chemicals in blood and measures of health in blood

What kind of information is the study collecting?

The study involves three types of information and data collection:

  • A survey about your water, consumer products, health, and other items
  • Collection of home water samples
  • Collection of blood samples

What are we doing now?

Enrollment in the study is currently underway. We are starting with a small pilot study in summer of 2023. However, we will sample across different neighborhoods and seasons over 2023-2025.

Who is paying for this study?

This project is funded by the federal government, specifically the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (part of the National Institutes of Health) through the Superfund Research Program.
