Sports-related injuries require specialized care to promote optimum healing. Whether you are a weekend jogger or tennis player, a professional soccer player or marathon runner, a child or senior citizen, or even a musician or actress, trauma to the muscles and joints can limit or prevent your participation in these activities.

The physicians of Yale Sports Medicine offer expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of all athletic injuries. The goal in patient care is the promotion and maintenance of an active lifestyle through non-operative rehabilitation programs and when indicated, scientifically-based, modern minimally-invasive arthroscopic surgical techniques. Our physicians offer the most up-to-date arthroscopic techniques in the treatment of joint damage to the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow.

Outpatient surgery is performed at the YNHH Health Service facilities at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Temple Surgical Center in New Haven as well as YNHH Guilford Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford, CT.

Staff members often consult with high school and university coaches and offer secondary & tertiary opinions. Seminars focusing on injury prevention and modern treatment methods are conducted regularly for coaches, trainers, and physicians.

The service also provides medical coverage for various athletic events and teams including the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament (WTA/ATP Event), the New Haven Road Race, and several area High Schools.

Among special services offered are the following:

  • Knee ligament reconstruction (primary, revision and multi-ligament)
  • Hip, knee, ankle, shoulder and elbow arthroscopy
  • Cartilage preserving & restoration procedures (including Micofracture, Osteochondral Transfer (OATs) and Carticel® and meniscus transplantation)
  • On-site physical therapy
  • Non-operative and alternative treatments for common sports injuries
