Once surgery is scheduled, the cardiac surgery office will work with the patient to coordinate details of hospital admission. The clinical nurse coordinator is available to answer any questions about pre-operative preparations, such as results of tests done before surgery, medication questions, post-operative issues, and any other concerns the patient may have. Pre-admission testing is done a week before surgery. This includes meeting with the anesthesiology team and a representative of the nursing department. Basic laboratory work is done along with any other required tests at this time.
Surgery typically begins at 7:30 in the morning at Yale-New Haven Hospital. In the majority of cases, patients arrive at the hospital an hour prior to their surgery to undergo surgery preparation.
John Elefteriades, MD discusses surgical options, the dangers of operation, and expectations for the weeks immediately following surgery.
