Vascular Neurology Fellowship
Yale New Haven Hospital offers a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowship in vascular neurology. Our program offers a unique exposure to all aspects of stroke care, from acute stroke management to outpatient secondary stroke prevention. Our location in New Haven, CT offers fellows an unparalleled opportunity to work with a diverse patient population. Additionally, Yale offers a diverse faculty who have trained at institutions all over the world, bringing a breadth of knowledge to stroke care.
At Yale, we focus on a multidisciplinary approach to complex, neurovascular patients, working closely with our colleagues in neurosurgery, neuro-radiology, interventional and structural cardiology, and vascular surgery. Our fellows also receive thorough training in telestroke care, which is now an integral part of vascular neurology.
In addition to our clinical strengths, Yale is at the forefront of cutting-edge stroke research. Our fellows have a key role in screening and enrolling patients in our numerous clinical trials and are encouraged to work on projects with our faculty who are dedicated to improving stroke care through their research endeavors. In the past, our fellows have routinely attended and presented at the annual International Stroke Conference and annual American Academy of Neurology conference. They have also published original research papers with the mentorship of our faculty.
Curriculum
Sample Block Schedule
As a vascular neurology fellow, you will split your time between inpatient stroke care, ambulatory stroke care, and elective.
1. Typically, fellows can expect to spend approximately six months in inpatient stroke care. Inpatient stroke care is divided into three rotations:
- Consultative stroke management - involving acute stroke, telestroke, and inpatient consultations
- Inpatient stroke service
- Neurocritical care
- Fellows typically spend one month rotating through our vascular neurology ambulatory clinics.
- Fellows participate in their own continuity clinic, directed by our vascular neurology faculty.
- Our fellowship includes built-in time, which can be used to pursue your own clinical and/or research interests. Past fellows have used this time to work on research projects with our faculty, focusing on clinical/quality improvement and basic science projects, abstracts/case reports, and book chapters, for example. They have also dedicated this time to their clinical interests such as neuroradiology, endovascular neurology, cardiology, and training in ultrasound/transcranial dopplers.
Educational Conferences
Highlights of the vascular neurology fellowship include our division and multidisciplinary conferences, which allow for both continued education and improved care of our patients. These routine conferences include:
- Vascular Case Conference: A weekly conference led by our fellows, who present complex patients to our group of vascular neurologists
- Multidisciplinary Interventional Case Conference: A monthly conference attended by vascular neurology, vascular neurosurgery, and neuroradiology, with a focus on complex and clinically challenging interventional cases
- Multidisciplinary PFO Conference: Attended by vascular neurology and structural neurology, this biweekly conference reviews all potential PFO closure patients
- Stroke/NICU Research Meetings: A biweekly conference that reviews recent trail enrollments and presents new and upcoming research
How to Apply
To be eligible for our vascular neurology fellowship, you must have completed an ACGME-approved neurology residency training program in the United States and must meet the requirements for Yale New Haven Hospital house staff.
Applications are submitted using the Electronic Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must also register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
The application should including the following documents:
- A letter of good standing
- A personal statement explaining the candidate's interest in Vascular Neurology and his/her future career goals, including his/her research interests
- A curriculum vitae
- USMLE scores
- Three letters of recommendation, addressed to Fellowship Director Dr. Reshma Narula.
NOTE: Due to the unpredictable nature of COVID-19, Vascular Neurology fellowship interviews will be conducted virtually.
