Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine's New Issue

April 05, 2023

Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine’s March 2023 issue on fluids has been published on PubMed Central. This focus issue features articles on many types of fluids from blood to Slurpee™ mix.

Highlights of the issue include an original contribution by researchers from Yale School of Public Health and Yale School of Medicine. Habet et al. analyzed serial tracheobronchial samples from children under age 2 undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) to further understand the relationship between CPB and acute lung injury (ALI).

A review by Pavăl et al. from the Romanian Association for Autoimmune Encephalitis and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, explores the importance of evaluating cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during a first-episode of psychosis (FEP). Pavăl et al. note that while most psychotic symptoms are psychiatric, up to 9% seem to have another underlying cause; examination of a patient’s CSF should be considered an integral component in early diagnosis of FEP.

Last, we present a narrative review from researchers at Michigan State University who examine natriuretic peptides (NPs) as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular and respiratory dysfunctions. Samad et al. present an overview of the predictive values of NPs in treating and diagnosing cardiopulmonary-related diseases.
