Turning Research into Action: YIGH's BEGIN Network Helps Shape Connecticut Law

Health scientists and clinical care providers have long recognized that health is shaped by far more than healthcare alone. Air and water pollution, transportation, housing, economic opportunity, and other environmental and social factors all influence health, yet efforts to address these issues often occur in isolation. Work led by Yale policy and health researchers, developed with significant contributions from Suzi Ruhl, JD, MPH, co-leader of the Yale Biological Embedding, Global Research & Intervention Network (BEGIN) at YIGH, has now helped shape Connecticut legislation that brings scientists, policymakers, and communities to the same table on these complex challenges.

Making Access to Innovation Integral to our Research

Dr. James Shepherd, infectious diseases specialist at the Yale School of Medicine, attended a two-day meeting hosted by Johns Hopkins University and Unitaid in Washington, DC, on "Reimagining Academia's Role in Closing Access Gaps Across the R&D-to-Delivery Continuum." The meeting brought together academic researchers, NGOs, the Gates Foundation, NIH, and WHO to discuss building equity of access into global health research from the start, addressing a long-standing pattern in which academic trials in LMICs generate the evidence, while funders control resulting IP, licensing, and pricing, often limiting access to the very treatments and diagnostics these trials help develop.

Global Health Connected: Building Healthier, More Resilient Cities

“What are you going to do when you go back?”

It’s the question that set Jeannette Ickovics, PhD, a faculty affiliate at the Yale Institute of Global Health (YIGH), on a new trajectory toward global climate and health. After nearly five years at Yale-NUS College in Singapore, first as a visiting professor and later as dean of faculty, Ickovics found herself reflecting on what the next phase of her career might look like upon returning to New Haven.

Global Health Connected: Developing Suicide Screening Approaches in Pakistan

Suicide remains a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 800,000 deaths each year. The burden falls disproportionately on low- and middle-income countries, which account for roughly 75% of global suicides. In South Asia, where suicide rates are among the highest globally, stigma and legal barriers often make prevention efforts especially challenging.

For Ashley Hagaman, PhD, MPH, associate professor of public health (social and behavioral sciences) at Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) and a faculty affiliate of the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH), addressing this issue means developing solutions that are not only evidence-based, but also locally feasible and culturally grounded.

Global Health Connected: Rethinking Palliative Care Delivery in Ethiopia

Palliative care focuses on improving quality of life for patients with serious illness – addressing pain, symptoms, and the emotional and social challenges that accompany disease. However, in many parts of the world, access to this type of care remains extremely limited. In Ethiopia, where access to palliative care is especially scarce, Eleanor Reid, MD, PhD, assistant professor of emergency medicine at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and a faculty affiliate of the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH), has been working to expand access through community-based approaches.
