Global Health Studies Speaker Series | Dr. Julio Frenk

The Global Health Studies Program will present the first talk in its Fall 2020 Global Health Speaker Series. The series examines transformative relationships between health and a range of fields including public policy, law, technology, international relations, scientific research, economy, journalism, and more.

Dr. Julio Frenk, University of Miami President and former Mexican Health Minister and Dean of Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, will present “Creating a Strong Global Response to Covid-19: What We Need to Do.” The event launches the speaker series by examining the theme of “Health and Global Cooperation.”

Dr. Julio Frenk serves as the sixth President of the University of Miami, where he also holds appointments as Professor of Public Health Sciences at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and Professor of Health Sector Management and Policy at the Business School. Previously, he served as the Dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and as the Minister of Health of Mexico. While Minister of Health of Mexico (2000-2006), he introduced a program of comprehensive universal coverage (Seguro Popular). He was the founding director-general of the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico and executive director for Evidence and Information Policy at the World Health Organization. Dr. Frenk is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, and the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico. He has been honored for his work with the Welch-Rose Award for Distinguished Service by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, the Clinton Global Citizen Award, and the Bouchet Medal for Outstanding Leadership presented by Yale University.

Robert Hecht, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Yale, will offer introductory remarks and moderate the Q&A.

The Zoom webinar will include a brief lecture followed by Q&A. Advance registration is required.
