How to Apply

The Yale Scholars in Implementation Science (YSIS) Career Development Program is an NIH-funded K12 program within the Yale Center for Implementation Science at the Yale School of Medicine. Funded by the NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, it is designed to train junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows late-stage dissemination and implementation science. YSIS will provide training and career development support for scholars who have a clinical or research doctoral degree and are committed to a career in research, leadership, and knowledge translation to foster the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in the areas of heart, lung, blood, or sleep medicine.

The YSIS training program will be tailored to the individual needs and level of experience of the scholar, and will contain two components:

1. Didactic/experiential learning, through formal coursework, directed study and participation in seminar series; and
2. At least one well-defined, mentored implementation science research project with an active dissemination component so that results are available and useful to end users. The didactic component will include education in implementation science. In addition, there is an educational component on leadership. For scholars with prior training in these areas, the training program can be customized.

Elements of the program include:

• Mentor Advisory Panels (MAPs) that will advise and guide each scholar; an option to complete the Master of Health Science (MHS) degree;
• Advanced coursework for implementation science; training and experience in research prioritization, data generation and evidence synthesis;
• The opportunity to work with 40+ mentors from the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, as well as New Haven non-profit agencies, a federally-qualified community health center, and the city’s Health Department; and
• Support is provided at 75% of salary, with additional funds for education and research. Scholars will be accepted into the program for 2 years, with potential to apply for a 3^rd year.

Metrics of scholar success at the completion of the program will include:

1. Satisfactory completion of all core courses and seminars or demonstration of equivalent competency;
2. Completion of a mentored research project, including demonstration of skills in implementation science;
3. Presentation of scientific abstracts at national meetings and other forums including those of health care delivery systems and government agencies;
4. Preparation of at least one peer-reviewed scientific manuscript and one other form of dissemination such as a policy brief, blog, or op-ed piece; and
5. Application for continued research funding through NIH or other federal agencies or foundations or sources.
