Yale School of Medicine's 19th Dean Takes Office
Nancy J. Brown, MD, took office on February 1 as the 19th dean of Yale School of Medicine, succeeding Robert J. Alpern, MD, who had led the school since 2004. Brown, a 1981 alumna of Yale College, comes to the medical school from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where she was Hugh J. Morgan Professor and chair of the Department of Medicine.
Medical School Names Two Associate Deans to Lead Office of Student Research
Sarwat Chaudhry, MD, and Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, will lead the Office of Student Research (OSR) as associate deans, effective January 1, 2020. They will succeed John N. Forrest Jr, MD, professor of medicine, who has led OSR since it was established in 1986.
Krystal Among New Leaders of YCCI
The Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) has announced the appointment of Brian R. Smith, MD, and John H. Krystal, MD ’84, as co-directors of the center and co-principal investigators of Yale’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). Eric Jose Velazquez, MD, becomes deputy director of clinical trials innovation for YCCI.

Vasilis Vasiliou designated the Bliss Professor of Epidemiology
Vasilis Vasiliou, newly designated as the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology, focuses his research on investigating the mechanisms of cellular responses to environmental stress and gene-environment interactions involved in a number of diseases, including alcohol-induced liver disease and various forms of cancer such as colon and pancreatic cancer, gout, obesity and diabetes.
Sanacora named the Gross Professor of Psychiatry
Gerard Sanacora, MD, PhD, newly named as the George D. Gross and Esther S. Gross Professor of Psychiatry, is a translational neuroscientist who specializes in the study of the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, and development of novel treatment strategies.
Yale expert leads effort to reduce ‘covert’ brain injury after cardiac procedures

Ann Kurth appointed the inaugural Linda Koch Lorimer Professor of Nursing
Ann Kurth, the inaugural Linda Koch Lorimer Professor of Nursing, is dean of the Yale School of Nursing and an expert on global health. As a clinically trained epidemiologist, Kurth focuses her research on how to improve the prevention, detection, and care of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; to promote reproductive health; and to strengthen health systems globally by using information and communication technologies, among other approaches, to further the establishment of health care and workforce training programs. Her work in the United States and abroad has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNAIDS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Health and Resources Administration, among others.
