The University College London (UCL) - Yale Alliance
Yale University and University College – London (UCL) have created a transatlantic partnership in biomedical research and clinical care to advance research capabilities and exchange expertise. Both institutions are partners with extensive hospital complexes that together treat over 1.5 million patients every year.
The two hospital systems and their databases provide a fertile test bed for much greater analysis of the efficacy of novel clinical research and exchange of best practices. The system of comprehensive clinical care delivered by UCL’s National Health Service (NHS)-affiliated hospitals is enabling joint longitudinal studies and clinical trials of new medications that could greatly benefit patients around the world. Also, by analyzing healthcare delivery in the diverse settings overseen by each institution, researchers are working to develop best management practices for hospitals.
Besides creating new joint clinical programs to treat cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, sudden cardiac death, and chronic total occlusion of the coronary arteries, the alliance has paved the way for cutting-edge genomic screening to investigate heart disease as well as initiatives in drug discovery and imaging. The collaboration will expand into other areas of basic research, including cancer biology, neuroscience and women’s health, in the hopes that by working together the results will exceed what each institution would otherwise be able to accomplish on its own. YCCI and UCL leaders met at Yale in January 2010 to begin exploring areas for collaboration and this next year will be used to further this development. Initial discussions have focused on education, career development and clinical research management as potential areas to target.
