The American Heart Association has awarded its Clinical Research Prize to Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, Harold H. Hines, Jr. Professor of Medicine and director of the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. Krumholz was recognized “for his work as a founding leader in the field of outcomes research. His work has led to improvements in the quality of care and outcomes for millions of patients nationwide and beyond,” said American Heart Association President Robert A. Harrington, MD, FAHA, who presented him with the award on November 17 at the association's Scientific Sessions 2019 in Philadelphia.

“Harlan has produced scholarship and led initiatives to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes, reduce disparities, enable transparency in practice and research, and avoid wasteful practices,” Harrington said. “His team has led national improvement initiatives, architected national and international quality measurement assays and strategies, developed platforms for research and clinical care improvement in China, promoted patient-centric approaches to research and clinical care, and created strategies and tools to facilitate open science and advance scientific integrity. His group is now focused on harnessing the digital transformation in healthcare to accelerate knowledge generation and facilitate the delivery of care aligned with the needs and preferences of each individual.”
